"Oatmeal Products Containing Carcinogenic Pesticide Residues” Incident Cited the Importance of Third-Party Testing

Food Industry is in dilemma again! On 26 May, ten oatmeal products containing a carcinogenic pesticide, glyphosate, were reported in Taiwan. At present, presence of glyphosate in food is prohibited in Taiwan. As reported, those affected products were found to contain between 0.1 ppm and 1.8 ppm of glyphosate and they were already being recalled from shelves!

Glyphosate is a widely used herbicide, so it is not uncommon to detect trace amount of it in numbers of daily food, such as wheat flour, wheat wholemeal, cereal grains and etc. However, consumers have to note the different Chinese names of glyphosate used. It is named as草甘膦in Hong Kong while嘉磷塞 in Taiwan.

Apart from glyphosate, manufacturers of oatmeal products should take considerations on the other pesticides. According to Hong Kong <<The Pesticide Residues in Food Regulation>> (Cap. 132CM), oats must comply with maximum residue levels of 81 pesticides in which Chlorpyrifos methyl, Dichlorvos, Fipronil and DDT are the common pesticide residues.
